Description

Listed 17th Century courthouse retaining many original features. Quiet location, ideal for walking and touring Clee Hills. Traditional farmhouse hospitality. Six miles from Ludlow.

Stoke Court is Grade II listed and dates from the 17th century. Originally it was an old court house (hence the name) and the cells can still be seen in the basement. It is a handsome, double-fronted stone house. In the 18th century. the front elevation was faced in brick as this was then considered more fashionable. Many original features remain in the house not the least of which is a recently discovered splendid inglenook fireplace in the visitors' sitting room. There is also a fine, carved oak over mantel in the other main reception room.

In the extensive grounds there are the well-preserved remains of 17th century formal gardens that have at their centre a 'prospect viewing mound' on which the original owners would have surveyed their garden. Nearby is a freshwater pond which is home to fish, ducks, geese, moorhens and coots. As we are situated between the Titterstone and Brown Clee hills there are wonderful views in all directions. Stoke Court is a working beef and sheep farm and, if time permits, we are happy to take our visitors on a tour of the farm and land. Stoke Court lies on the eastern edge of the village of Stoke St. Milburga and looks south towards Ludlow and the hills of Wales.

Our accommodation consists of one spacious double/family room with an en suite shower. There is also a single room. Both are lovely sunny rooms and have far reaching views. Tea and coffee making facilities and hair driers are provided. Between the two rooms is a bathroom for the sole use of our guests. There is ample parking and plenty of outside space for relaxing. Although not allowed in the house, dogs are welcome and we provide an outdoor kennel. We do not do evening meals but our farmhouse breakfasts are a specialty. We pride ourselves on sourcing all our produce from local suppliers and our own farm. We will also happily cater for vegetarians.

Stoke St. Milborough is an attractive, unspoiled village in a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. It nestles on the lower slopes of the Brown Clee Hill which is one of 'the blue remembered hills' that the poet Housman wrote about. There is a thriving bell ringing group at the church of St. Milburga and there is also a well which is on the site of a miracle performed by St. Milburga who was the prioress at Wenlock Abbey. The surrounding countryside is ideal walking terrain and there are numerous footpaths which radiate out from the village; the Shropshire Way and Jack Mytton's Way are both long distance footpaths that are easily accessible from the farm. Ludlow is six miles away. It is a small market town that is of historic and architectural interest. There is a well-preserved castle, a fine church (which is one of the greater churches of England and where Housman is buried), numerous listed buildings and a thriving market. It is said that one of the most handsome Georgian streets in England is Broad Street which leads down to the river Teme. Over the past few years Ludlow has become famous for its restaurants - it has the most Michelin starred restaurants in England outside London. There are also many other pubs, restaurants, cafes and tea rooms that provide good, wholesome food. If you are in a sporting mood Ludlow has two golf courses - one full sized and a nine hole one. There is a new Leisure Centre with a good swimmmg pool. You can boat on the river Teme, go horse riding, clay pigeon shooting, and there is also a National Hunt racecourse. The Assembly Rooms in the market square serve as Ludlow's cinema and theatre. If you hit the right weekend you can even catch 'Flicks in the Sticks' in the village hall in Stoke itself. Whatever you want to do - relax, ramble, star gaze (we have no light pollution here), eat well, sight see, bird watch or just soak up the beautiful scenery - it's all here for you in some of England's most glorious and unspoiled countryside. We will make you very welcome. We are open all year. Come and enjoy it.
