Description
Only an hour away from the Midlands and yet a century away in time! Open every weekend until the end of October and most weekdays between Spring Bank Holiday and mid September.
Your journey on the eight mile long Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway begins on the edge of the historic market town of Welshpool. Upon leaving Welshpool, the trains battle up the steep Golfa Bank with the sound of the locomotive echoing from the hills. The little steam trains leave Welshpool station at 11.30 and 14.30 for the scenic 16 mile round trip.
From the open balconies of our unique Austrian coaches you will see the beautiful mid-Wales countryside roll slowly by as you travel deep into the delightful Banwy Valley. You may even see deer, hawks and otters as your journey unfolds.
The train will be hauled by one of our historic steam locomotives from as far away as Finland, Sierra Leone, Austria & Manchester! Towards journey's end the train travels alongside the River Banwy into the village of Llanfair Caerinion.
It was originally operated by Cambrian Railways and was then taken over by Great Western Railway and British Railways. After 1931 only freight was carried until the railways closure from lack of profits in 1956. In 1963 a group of railway enthusiasts re-opened the line and started searching for new rolling stock, which fortunately leaves this line open for visitors to come and enjoy.
