Description

Shrewsbury is fortunate to have its own beautiful, 29-acre parkland known as The Quarry. Throughout the year you’ll find a host events taking place at The Quarry Park, including The Carnival, Regatta  and Dragon Boat racing to name just a few.

The Quarry used to be a rough place, where tanneries were sited and stone was dug and the local women used to do their washing. The good gentlefolk of Shrewsbury were having none of it, though, and decided instead to create a riverside promenade for their refined Regency ladies. We still use it for precisely the same purpose. Things change slowly in Shropshire.

The Quarry has been our most important site for recreation since the 16th Century. It is the perfect place to relax, enjoy walks, picnic, fish along the banks of the River Severn, or just let off steam.

At its centre lies the Dingle, a formal floral masterpiece created by world renowned gardener Percy Thrower - during his 28 years here as our Parks Superintendent.

Its a beautiful sunken garden landscaped with alpine borders, colourful bedding plants, shrubbery and water features.

Each August The Quarry comes alive with the Shrewsbury Flower Show, where you'll be confronted with the site of more than 3 million blooms. That's a lot of blooms. Show jumping, continuous arena entertainment and top military bands to entertain you, all encircled by the majestic loop of the River Severn. The day ends literally with a bang - a spectacular firework display designed to put the blooms in the shade.  No that can't be right.
