| Llanrhaeadr-Ym-Mochnant is a delightful little place whose chief claim to fame is that it is where Bishop Morgan completed he first translation of the Bible into Welsh. More recently it was the location for the film 'The Englishman who went up a hill and Came Down a Mountain', starring Hugh Grant. |
LAKE VYRNWY
This part of the route travels deep into the Berwn Mountains and offers stunning views - some of the roads are very narrow.
Llanfyllin
This old market town on the upper reaches of the River Cain takes its name from Myllin, a Celtic saint of the seventh century who was the first cleric to baptise using total immersion. The restored holy well bearing his name, above the town, provides great views.
In the mountains beyond Llanrhaeadr-Ym-Mochnant you will find one of the seven wonders of Wales:
Pistyll Rhaeadr Waterfall, at 240 feet (73m) the highest in England and Wales and 60 feet (18m) higher than Niagara Falls. Geroge Barrow described it in Wild Wales as "an immense skein of silk agitated and disturbed by tempestuous blasts ... I never saw water falling so gracefully."
Llangedwyn Mill and craft Workshops from an attractive group of stone buildings on the riverbank converted into workshops for a silversmith, a potter, and a stained glass worker.
Lake Vyrnwy
Here the mountains embrace a lake containing some twelve billion gallons (54bn litres) of water resulting in scenery reminiscent f the Alps.
Surprising, this apparently natural beauty was created by the Liverpool Corporation to give a water supply to the city, some seventy-five miles (120km) from here. The Lake Vyrnwy Visitor Centre provides information on the area including birdwatching, lakeside walking, cycling and driving trails.
