Ellesmere Summer Festival 2019

August 9th, 10th and 11th

The three day summer festival celebrates the works of local crafters and artists. As

well as being spread throughout the town, activities will be centered around the canal

wharf and the historic canal workshops.

The festival commences on Friday 9th  August with a craft market in the Market Hall in Scotland Street. Commencing at 10.00am Admission is free. The high quality of the items produced by local crafters has often been commented on. Take a walk down to the canal side during the day and view the canal traders in their decorated narrow boats, some selling traditional cheeses and chutneys, others showing fine examples of canal ware. Beware of the Pirate Boat! with their unruly crew. Commencing on Friday also will be a real ale beer festival at the White Hart Inn in Birch Road. A wide range of real ales will be on tap. Commencing at 12 midday each day, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.On Friday and Saturday evenings there will also be a barbecue and live music at the White Hart Inn.

 

On Saturday 10th August, once again the craft market will be open in the Market

Hall commencing at 10.00am. In the Town Hall there will be a large model railway exhibition taking place with almost twenty layouts of various gauges on display, together with trade stalls, refreshments are available. There will be an admission charge for this event which commences at 10.00am Once again down by the canal side, the narrow boat traders will be present. The Canal and River trust will be operating an unusual pontoon bridge over to the historic workshops nestling in the fork of the Llangollen canal and the Ellesmere arm. You can walk there if you wish, just follow the signs along the towpath. At the workshops

 

the forge will be in operation and the pattern shop should be seen. This is where Thomas Telford had his offices when he supervised the construction of the canal from Llangollen. An opportunity to take a leisurely free narrow boat cruise will also be available. Returning to the canal wharf, throughout the day there will be a charity market, starting at 10.00am supporting a number of local charities. Street entertainers will also be wandering around the town centre , you can sit and marvel at the Fairground organ..Feeling peckish? you will be spoilt for choice from the wide variety of tasty foodstuffs on offer from the various catering facilities.

 

Our own local singing group The Shropshire Boatmen will be performing in the afternoon at both the Canal Wharf and The Canal Workshops. New this year, our talented band of street performers will at 6pm be giving a performance of George and the Dragon in Stokes’ field. (near the white canal bridge). Children will play an important part in this production as during the day there will be an opportunity at the Canal wharf for them to make their own paper dragons and pennants for the production . On Sunday 11th August, the craft fair will be open in the Market Hall as will be the Railway exhibition in the Town Hall. Down at the canal wharf the day commences åwith a combined churches open air service at 10.00am. This will be followed by a classic car show, bringing together the pride and joy of local classic car owners. Come along, have a chat with their owners and recall by- gone days.If you own a classic car bring it along.

 

Once again all the canal side at tractions will be present throughout the day. Also on the Sunday at 12 mid day there will be a Hectors Greyhound rescue Fun Dog Show in Cremorne Gardens down by the Mere. All breeds are welcome and there are classes for everyone to enter their pet. On Friday 9 th , Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th August the Ellesmere Methodist Church, in Trimpley, Ellesmere will be holding their flower festival, Friday and |Saturday 10.00am to 4pm.Sunday 2pm. to 5pm.culminating with a church service on the Sunday evening at 5.30pm Further details re all these events and contact details for stallholders and exhibitors can be viewed on our website at: ellesmeresummerfestival.weebly.com
