Jane Austen’s Emma to be performed at Severn Valley Country Park
Hotbuckle Productions are performing Jane Austen’s classic, Emma at Severn Valley Country Park as part of their national tour.
The company, based in Shrewsbury, excels at adapting classic novels and re-telling the stories with humour and emotion, to make them accessible to everyone.
In this production, Emma Woodhouse is handsome, clever and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition. She’s also a bit of a meddler. After her governess is married to the kindly Mr Weston (at Emma’s instigation of course), Miss Woodhouse’s path in life is clear. She must become a matchmaker.
But as her interfering gets out of hand and events spiral beyond her control, it may be time for Emma to question her judgement. Gently advised by childhood friend Mr Knightley, can Emma untangle the web she’s spun? And what does she truly know of her own heart?
This new adaptation by director Adrian Preater, is an entertaining version of Austen’s book and it brings to life the many characters within the story. The cast skilfully share the 12 main roles switching between characters effortlessly with the change of a shawl or bonnet, accent or gesture. Added to this the story moves along with the inventive use of live music throughout. The witty script and comedic timing of the cast will ensure it will be an enjoyable evening for the audience.
