Shrewsbury International Cartoon Festival

Shrewsbury International Cartoon Festival celebrates its 13th year with a shift of format and a strong whiff of ‘LUCK’ as the theme.

This years’ Festival features many more exhibitions of cartoon art by some of the best artists in the country; a day of live cartooning by professional artists; workshops; animation; informative talks; music and children’s activities.

We have created many more opportunities to see the cartoons this year. The ‘Luck of the Draw’ exhibition at Bear Steps Gallery from 4th – 30th April is a selling exhibition of around 80 cartoons. Two exhibitions of cartoons are being displayed at Theatre Severn with more ‘Luck of the draw’ in the Chapel Bar and ‘Pot Luck’ in the Manby Bowdler gallery. There will be on screen cartoons in the Old Market Hall Café Bar and ‘Dead Wingers – The Unluckiest Birds’ will be shown as a digital presentation at Shropshire Wildlife Trust, Abbey Foregate. Last but not least the S-mile Trails just got tastier, a coffee, cake and cartoon trail around town throughout April.

During Cartoonists Live on Saturday 16th April, around 40 professional cartoonists from around the UK and overseas will descend on Shrewsbury and be set loose around the town to caricature and cartoon for the public. The Square in the centre of town is the main area of activity. The public will see artists at work drawing caricatures and giant cartoons to create an exhibition which takes shape during the day.

An important aim of the Festival is to provide an opportunity for people of all ages to ‘Try Your Luck’. On Saturday 16th a number of workshops are on offer led by professional cartoonists. No need to book just come along. These include a stop-motion model-making workshop 10am -12pm and 1-3pm lead by local artists Joe Coulman and Hamish McKeown with assistance from Shrewsbury College Art and Design Dept., Harry Venning’s workshop – Release Your Inner Cartoonist, previously at the Edinburgh Fringe and Tim Harries’ workshop ‘Create your own Comic Strip’ 2-4pm. We also have our own Fringe events this year!

On Friday 15th we are delighted to be hosting an illustrated talk by award winning Private Eye cartoonist Tony Husband. Tony’s talk is a heartening tale of his family’s journey through his Dad’s dementia. 15th April 7.30pm @ Lion Hotel. Tickets on the door £10 with all proceeds to Age UK. On Saturday 16th, Terry Anderson of the CRNI will share stories of cartoonists who have been arrested, imprisoned or worse for the simple act of creating cartoons – 11.30am 12.45pm @The Central, Claremont Street. Nous somme Shrewsbury.

Shrewsbury Cartoon Festival has support from the County and Town Councils as well as private sponsors, who are getting in on the luck of the draw this year - Tanners, Halls Fine Art, Morris Lubricants, Hatfields Jaguar and Balfours.
