More

The small village of More is located three kilometers north-east of Bishop's Castle and is centred upon the church of St. Bartholomew. The village is also fortunate to have the remains of a typical Motte and Bailey castle, which overlies another earlier ringwork.

It is believed that the village would have been laid out sometime in the late eleventh or early twelfth century when it was split form the larger Anglo-Saxon parish of Lydbury North.

Little is known as to the history the castle however records do show that during the reign of Henry I (1100 - 1135) the Lord of More was required to command two hundred foot soldiers whenever the King of England crossed into Wales during Wartime. He would have marched in the vanguard of the army and personally carried the Kings standard. The earthworks provide a fitting tribute to the historical importance of More during the early Middle Ages.
