Henry Eckford is known for breeding sweet peas in the town of Wem, Shropshire where he perfected the breeding of his Grandiflora sweet peas. He increased the size and general performance so it was a great improvement over previous varieties.
Eckford was a Fellow of the Royal Horticultural Society, and was awarded the Society's highest award, the Victoria Medal of Honour.
The town of wem still plays host to the Wem Sweet Pea Festival each year. The event is organised by the Eckford Sweet Pea society of Wem and the festival is held each year in July. A selection of old fashioned varieties are on show including those bred by Henry Eckford.
