Shropshire Heritage

This itinerary focuses on heritage sites within Shropshire. Firstly the 12th century Ludlow Castle, then the 13th century Manor House, Stokesay Castle and after lunch on to Wroxeter Roman City, Viroconium, the 4th largest city in Roman Britain, for a tour of the vine yard.

10.00 Ludlow Castle The 12th century castle is set over the river Teme and still has many structures intact including the great hall, curtain walls and tower.

*From Ludlow take the A49 towards Shrewsbury, the turning for Stokesay Castle is before Craven Arms.

11.30 Stokesay Castle Named Stokesay castle but actually a 13th century manor house which is the finest and best preserved in England.

*Take the A49 to Shrewsbury, Dobbies is off the main roundabout.

1.00 Lunch Dobbies Garden Centre, offering a café and large gift shop. Tel: 01743 874261

*Off the roundabout take the A5 towards Telford, turn on to the B4380 towards Wroxeter. The vineyard is sign posted.

2.45 Wroxeter Roman Vineyard Wroxeter Roman Vineyard produces white, red and sparkling wines and is one of the most northerly vineyards. The vineyard is part of the site of the Roman city of Viroconium. You can explore the old Roman defences and lavender area, sample the wines and participate in a tour of the vineyard. Tours need to be booked in advance, you can book on line and a deposit must be paid.
