Description

Much Wenlock in Shropshire is the home of the modern Olympic Games, no honestly! Dr William Penny Brookes was a local doctor who campaigned tirelessly to revive the ancient Greek games.

It is somewhat fitting that the town has its own Olympic trail that takes you past some of the sites within the town associated with the good doctor and the Wenlock Olympian society. The trail is approximately just a little over a mile in distance and begins and ends at the Much Wenlock Museum, just off the town square.

The Museum houses a large collection of Wenlock Olympian society artefacts which are on display and act to illustrate the significant role of the town and Dr Brookes in revival of the games.

Leaflets covering the trail are available from the Museum itself, the Guildhall and the tourist information centre. Throughout the trail there are several information boards giving visitors more information about the significance of each site to the Games.

You'll go past sites including Linden Field, which was the site of first Wenlock games and the embankment where the steam trains carried passengers from Buildwas to Much Wenlock.
